I’ve been craving a good banh mi (pronounced “bahn mi”) for a while now without realizing that the last time I had a good one was when I was in the Philippines. The simple reason is that the banh mi is a Filipino dish and the flavors are different there. I was in the Philippines for a wedding and there were the standard “banh mi” choices in every restaurant and stall that I visited.
But this is different. In the Philippines, the banh mi is a dish made with chopped pork and vegetables. In China, it’s a dish made with pig’s blood and vegetables. This is an example of how to get a banh mi in most Chinese restaurants. But the difference between the two is that here, the flavors are more complex. The banh mi here is actually a type of braised pork.
The Philippines has a reputation for being one of the world’s most dangerous countries for people who have gone missing for more than a week. There has been a recent trend for the CIA to change the names of people who disappear to ‘ghost-names’, and that is what Maria’s family was called. That’s also why the family members are never found.

The CIA created an intelligence network called the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) that was charged with investigating and discovering criminal acts and other sensitive national security information. It was first set up in the White House in 1953 and then set up in all of the federal government’s research and research institutions in 1961.
